Hamilton Engagement Photos
I was excited to meet Mai and Jon for their Hamilton engagement photos because I knew that the best people to know a city are the people in the restaurant industry. The plan was simple: breakfast at their home, walk their dog, Niko, and then off to explore downtown, Hamilton. I tell all couples I shoot that a good session is not about the location, it’s all about the connection between the couple. And the way Mai and Jon looked at each other was pure love and a joy to document.
If you live in Toronto, you’re probably aware of the new movement of young families, creative people, chefs, and artists that have decided to live a more affordable life in Hamilton, ON. Jon and Mai, a chef and a baker, lived and worked in Toronto, but when Jon got an offer to be the executive chef of Hamilton’s Berkeley North, They knew it is an offer to good to refuse.
Mai and Jon met in high school in Mississauga and started dating in grade 11. Believe it or not, they even went to prom together! They parted ways but found each other again after two years, and they haven’t let go since. Jon proposed in Tokyo, Japan in December 2015 in front of a huge hollowed out tree while they were taking a stroll through Yoyogi Park. These two love to travel and spent a lot of time abroad for their professions. Mai studied Pastry Arts in New York City, while Jon worked as a chef in Italy and New York. They even spent time together in Paris, France. Yet with all of that travelling, they have one place they love especially – their home. In our emails, Mai told me, “We like to go out, and I love dancing, but I would say I most look forward to enjoying a great meal (cooked by us) and watching a movie at home.”
I love starting an engagement photo session at home because it sets and easy-going vibe. And with these two, this vibe was strong through the entire shoot. After playing with their pup, Niko, at Gage Park, we went to James St N and made Merit Brewing Co. our first stop. After a beer, we walked around the area and found a colourful alleyway where we all agree that this was the right place to start a spontaneous party for two with the help of Drake. We ended this perfect day by driving to the “mountain” on the upper part of Hamilton to catch the last ray of light over the city from above.
More couples like Mai and Jon, please!
